American Robotics Project - Base Station

Project Summary 

  • Lead mechanical designer for the next gen drone base station

  • Entrusted to design a completely new system that was both less expensive and more robust that the existing base station

Project Steps

  • Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to develop an extensive set of requirements that culminated in a SRR

  • Collected new concept ideas from the entire company 

    • Had a transparent concept evaluation process ​and down selected to the best idea

  • Designed, built and tested a proof-of-concept system to de-risk future development

Skills Learned 

  • Experience developing realistic but aggressive project milestone and deliverable dates for a multi year project

  • Designed the largest and most complicated robotic system I have dealt with to date

  • Learned to worked with a cross functional team to develop a SRR

American Robotics Project - Payloads

Project Summary 

  • Lead the design and creation of a custom gimbal for new payload sensors

  • Packaged sensors to be flown and operated of gimbal design

Project Steps

  • Worked with stakeholders to develop requirements for mass, volume and feature set

  • Made initial motor and encoder selection from market research and mass assumptions

  • Designed and built POC gimbal to validate component selection and software integration

  • Used learnings to generate the production design that was ready to deploy at customer sites

Skills Learned 

  • Learned how to efficiently build and tune a gimbal

  • Experience with motor and encoder selection/validation  

  • Packaging sensors and electronics to make lightweight, watertight and robust payloads
